ACORN High School for Social Justice Sponsored by the NYC Board of Education, this 90,000 square foot school is in the shell of a former vaudeville theater in Brooklyn. The theater's interior was removed and a new six-story steel and concrete structure was inserted within the original masonry walls. Among the unique retrofits to the building, a gymnasium was inserted into the former therater’s flyspace. In addition to a new library and computing stations peppered throughout the facility, the school is equipped with a high tech audio-visual laboratory and color is used as a device to designate the different floors. The ornate stone and terra cotta exterior was restored to its former glory as a focal point of the community. |
